September Astronomy -Telescope Clinic & Last View of Jupiter

This event has already taken place.
Check out our calendar for more great events.

Date: September 15, 2018
Time: 7:30 pm
Location New Pond Farm Observatory, West Redding
Member Price: $4.00
Non-Member Price: $6.00
Summary:
Three planets will cruise through the early night sky, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. This will be our last look at Jupiter this season. Plus bring your telescopes to our optional 6pm clinic.
Detailed Description:

The summer of the planets rolls on with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn still in the early evening sky as well as earth’s own Moon.  The earth is leaving Mars behind, but viewing is still good.  This will be the last glimpse of mighty Jupiter, its moons and cloud bands for the current season.  We will also view and discuss the late summer and early fall constellations.

Come join us as we view what Galileo described as "three fixed stars, totally invisible by their smallness" all close to Jupiter and lying on a straight line along it.  His observations from Jan 7-13, 1610 were to cause a revolution in astronomy.  It did not conform to the accepted Aristotelian cosmology that all heavenly bodies should circle the Earth.

At 6:00PM:  An optional telescope clinic will begin at 6:00 PM for those who would like to bring their telescopes and get advice on how to use them.

At 7:00 PM, there will be an optional mini-lesson for participants, especially children, to better understand what they will be viewing. This will take place in the classroom and is included in the price of the program.  Viewing will begin on Astronomy Hill at 7:30PM.
