Detailed Description:

The Waxing Crescent Moon is day 5 of the Moon's 29 day cycle.  It reveals 28% of its surface.  It is just 2 days before the first Quarter or half moon. One of the major features we will observe is the Mare Tranquillitatis (The Sea of Tranquility).  Its relatively smooth fields of basaltic lavas and equatorial position made it an ideal location for the first manned lunar landing which occurred on July 20, 1969. The southwestern portion is where Neil Armstorng transmitted his famous words, "That's one small step for Man, one giant leap for Mankind."  Other celestial objects we will be viewing is Jupiter and its Galilean Moons, Saturn with its spectacular rings and the major Summer Constellations: Cygnus, Aquila and Lyre. Join us and explore the secrets of the night sky.

At 8:00 PM, there will be an optional mini-lesson for participants, especially children, to better understand what they will be viewing. This will take place in the classroom and is included in the price of the program.  Viewing will begin on Astronomy Hill at 8:30PM.
