Come join us as the night sky slips from fall to winter. Jupiter, the crescent waning Moon and Orion will be prominent features - and maybe some reindeer too. All Ages Welcome
Detailed Description:

The Winter Solstice, also known as the shortest day of the year, occurs on Dec 21st this year.   The ancients would have been watching intently for the solstice to occur as it would mean the Sun would start to return and the Earth would be reborn.   This program gives you a glimpse at what the ancient astronomers were looking for as they waited for the solstice.   Jupiter will be almost a solo planet in the early evening sky.  The constellation Orion is now becoming prominent.  But other constellations like Auriga, Gemini and of course the ever present Cassiopeia can be viewed easily.

Come join us for some celestial fun.  All Ages Welcome!

Fun Fact:  The Earth does not move at a constant speed in its elliptical orbit.  Therefore the seasons are not of equal length.  In fact the time it takes for the Earth to move from the spring equinox to the summer solstice is 92.8 days, from summer solstice to the fall equinox is 93.6 days, from fall equinox to the winter solstice is 89.8 days and from the winter solstice to the spring equinox is 89 days.  Thus, Spring and Summer are longer than fall and winter in the North Hemisphere.
