Summary:
A presentation with Dr. Heidi Hammel, Senior Research Scientist, Space Science Institute, Boulder, CO
Detailed Description:

In mid July 2009, an amateur astronomer in Australia noticed an unusual black cloud on Jupiter.  Within hours, telescopes around the world had confirmed that the black spot was in fact an impact site: something had smacked into Jupiter and created a colossal explosion! By the end of the next day, Ridgefielder Dr. Heidi Hammel had been granted permission to use the Hubble Space Telescope's recently installed Wide Field Camera 3 to take fantastic images of the impact site (before the camera had even been fully tested and calibrated!). She left the day after that to travel to Hawaii to use some of the world's largest telescopes in the world to study this surprising event.  Come find out what she learned!   This program is free and suitable for ages 8 to 108! No registration. Co-sponsored by The Discovery Center and Ridgefield Library.
